Week 02.

Unfortunately this week hasn’t been productive at all due to certain obstacles that I am really struggling to overcome in the 3DS Max. My aim last week was to create more assets than I made last week, which was only two, shockingly I have produced none.

This week I created four more variations of the jar I made last week, instead of creating four new jars from scratch I simply used the original jar as a template and made modifications from their onwards. When I had finished the fifth jar I turned on x-ray on all the assets to provide me with a rough idea of what they would look like translucent and after doing so I packed up and went home only to realise the next day when opened up the file that jars would completely vanish if taken out of x-ray. What added even more confusion to me and my group were how all my meshes were inside out too, this could be fixed by pressing the ‘Flip’ button but unfortunately it didn’t bring back my models, after a few days wasted I had to give up on them and start from scratch, which in hindsight I should have done from the beginning. I also attempted to unwrap my lamp this week but due to its complex shapes I failed to complete it.

During Critical Studies I analysed a piece from Raphael Lecoste, the art was a concept for Assassin’s Creed. We were asked to bring in a piece of art that we had a strong emotional connection too, as someone who doesn’t look a lot into art nothing came to mind. This made me realise that I really need to start looking into other artists’ work as it can help a lot when comes to developing my own artistic skills. I was advised to check out artstation as it seems to be home to a lot of professional artists. Raphael’s work was the first piece of art that I came across that I thought was really impressive and I could possibly critique.

A few brief points I mentioned:

Balance - very balanced image, the large mountains on the right is balanced by the amount of detail and focus on the left Focus - is on the protagonist of Assassin's Creed Movement - The protagonist actually cuts off the path our eye would have taken in the image, regardless the eye will still follow the path through the ravine but not as easy. Contrast - the bottom of the ravine is very dark and it contrasts with the higher surfaces being hit by the sun.

Time Management: Think I definitely could have put more time into troubleshooting the problems I came across, but it is very discouraging to continue looking for a solution after so many failed, it’s not hard to give up after trying many times.

Action Plan: - Recreate the glass jar with 5 variations [Weekend] - Unwrap all 5 jars [Weekend] - Finish unwrapping the lamp [Weekend]

- Create 2 more assets

Asset 1 [Monday - Tuesday]

Asset 2 [Wednesday - Thursday]

- Find at least 3 artists on ArtStation that I’m genuinely interested in - Have a go at a paint over [Wednesday]
